The Academy offers four types of membership.

1. Full Membership is open to any person who holds a recognized university degree or equivalent qualification, or whose services to English offer grounds for selection.
2. Associate Membership is open, without restriction, to anyone identifying with the aims of the Academy.
3. Corporate Membership is open to public bodies, commercial organizations etc. which wish to associate themselves with the objectives of the Academy.
4. Institutional Membership is open to institutions (i.e. schools, libraries, tertiary institutions and the like).

The Academy is governed by an elected Council, which appoints a President and an Executive Committee. Among the distinguished people who have served as President are the late Professor Gwen Knowles-Williams, the late Professor Guy Butler, the late Mr M C O'Dowd and Dr K B Hartshorne.

The annual membership fees are as follows:
Full Members: R110
Associate Members: R77
Corporate Membership: R1 000
Intstitutional Membership: R600

Joint memberships are as follows:
Full & Full: R165
Full & Associate: R132
Associate & Associate: R110
*Members over the age of sixty and not in full-time employment, as well as registered students not in full-time employment, may pay half the normal rate, which makes it R55 for Full members and R38.50 for Associate members (Associate members do not receive the English Academy Review).

Cheques made payable to the English Academy of Southern Africa may be sent to the office. Alternatively, payment may be made electronically or by direct deposit. The Academy’s banking details are as follows:
